Patient Parel Vallei content with draw against Boland Landbou

After winning the toss at The Stiaan van Zyl Oval, Parel Vallei High leaned into the duration of their mid-week, two-day, double innings fixture against Boland Landbou. Perhaps, though, a little too much, scoring at a snail’s pace in their first innings of 198/10.

They were on the back foot early on, losing opener Daniel Adonis to the 50th ball of the innings, out for two from 19 deliveries.

He was caught by Matthew Geldenhuys off the bowling of Francois Prins, who went on to record a very economical 2/20 from 19 overs.

Usually, bowling with such economy would be exceptional. It was outstanding, but remarkably average in the mid-week contest, as the Somerset West outfit was dismissed just shy of 200 runs after an astounding 130.5 overs (785 deliveries) at the crease. Their run-scoring rate was a slow 1.5 per over, with their innings lasting the entire first day.

The hosts’ Kobus Conradie and Troy Davis bowled 31 overs each and shared 30 maiden overs between them. Conradie had 13 in his return of 2/49, while Davis had 17 in his 2/36.

Batting at four, Divan Sander top scored, making 60 off 191 deliveries, which included nine of the 17 fours hit by Parel Vallei. Chris Hughes, who made his way to the middle after the fall of the first wicket, made 30 off 135 balls and shared a 53-run third-wicket partnership with Sander.

The Farmers tried to get things moving on the second day. However, they weren’t able to build enough of a lead to inject life and a possible outcome other than a draw into the contest. They tallied 288/7 from 105 overs before the match was chalked off as drawn.

Openers’ Kobus Conradie and Gideon Kotze delivered a solid start, sharing a 128-run opening stand. Conradie knocked 71 off 222 balls, hitting eight fours, while Kotze curated the most exciting and highest total of the match, smashing five fours and five sixes in his 77 off 130.

Number five batsman, Louis Du Plessis, joined the half-century club, cracking five fours and two maximums in an otherwise unhurried and unbeaten 57 off 108.

Gunther Schmidt, the ninth man in, provided some excitement, smashing two fours and four sixes in a relatively hasty 42 from 61 deliveries.

Parel Vallei’s Dirk van Zyl matched Conradie’s and Davis’s 31 overs, claiming 3/81, which featured seven maidens. Chris Hughes also had a long day with the ball, sending down 30 overs, 11 of them maidens, and finishing with 2/71.
