Nail biting win as Waterkloof trump Affies

NewsGDewaldBrevisThe Northern’s Platinum Cricket League has started up again with the first round of fixtures having taken place on the 17th August 2019 across the region. The season sees the schools play each other once in a round robin set of fixtures.

In the A Section Affies 1st XI lost narrowly to a strong Waterkloof 1st XI by 3 wickets, with two balls to spare. Affies set a score of 255/9 after their allotted 50 overs. Dewald Brevis top scored with 108 from 91 balls which included an astonishing eleven maximums. Kyle Welman chipped in with bowling figures of 10 overs 4/42.

Waterkloof’s chase was built around a 127-run partnership between Simeon De Bruyn (77 from 93 balls) and all-rounder Hardus Coetzer. Waterkloof were cruising to a comfortable win up until Schalk Engelbrecht picked up three crucial wickets slowing down the rate and dragging the game in to a dramatic final over win. Waterkloof’s batsmen managed to hold their nerve allowing them to cross the line.

In the other two games of the day Pretoria Boys’ High managed to win comfortably by 36 runs against a strong Menlopark side at Hofmeyer Oval. Tim Ferguson set the tone with 52 not out from 45 balls and Kieran Croome falling short of a hard-grafted half century making 48 from 94 balls.

Jaryd van Straaten from Boys High was the pick of the bowlers for the day bagging 4/25 in 7 overs. Tristan Janse van Rensburg from Menlo scored 64 from 103 balls giving Menlopark a chance after losing three wickets early wickets leaving the middle order with a tough ask.

Prestige College hosted Centurion to a low scoring match where the visitors bowled the hosts out for 112 runs. Nathan Fox managed to pick up 4/17 in 6.2 overs and middle order batsmen Michael Salomon top scored with 57 not out to guide Centurion to an easy victory.

The first round match between Garsfontein and Cornwall Hill College is postponed to a future date.

Tomorrow sees another action-packed weekend.

Affies 255/9 from 50 overs (Dewald Brevis 108; K.Welman 4/42); Waterkloof 256/7 from 49.4 overs (Hardus Coetzer 80, Simeon De Bruyn 77; Schalk Engelbrecht 3/27). Waterkloof won by three wickets.

Prestige College 112 from 35.2 overs (T.Baloyi 19; Nathan Fox 4/17); Centurion 113/2 (Michael Salomon 57*). Centurion won by eight wickets.
