England U-19 bowlers set up SA collapse
The England under-19s bowlers continued the good form of their batsmen, restricting the Coca-Cola South Africa U-19s to a disappointing 77 all out on the second day of the second Youth Test at Northampton on Friday.
England set South Africa a heavy 394-run target. Tom Alsop and Joe Clarke shared a 58-run, third-wicket partnership before the former lost his wicket for 77 runs. Rob Jones (52) was the only other batsman to manage a half-century as South Africa’s captain, Sibonelo Makhanya claimed two more wickets on the day to finish with his side’s best bowling figures of 4/48.
Lwandiswa Zuma recovered from his performance on Day One, where he was 0/50 at stumps to finishing the second day with 3/73. Aiden Brooker claimed his second wicket when he dismissed Brad Taylor (6) to finish with 2/70.
#The visitors’ batting reply did not match up to the hosts’ performance. Four batsmen – Hanco Olivier, Grant Roelofsen, Makhanya and Andile Phehlukwayo – lost their wickets without scoring, putting their side on the back foot. They lost all their wickets in 39.1 overs, with the highest South African runs scored by Ryan Rickelton and Stefan Klopper, who each added 12. The top score of the innings was provided by the hosts, with 15 runs in extras, including eight byes, four leg byes and three no-balls.
Saqib Mahmood was the leading wicket-taker with three wickets for 12, while skipper, Will Rhodes and Luke Wood took 2/9 and 2/14 respectively. Rob Jones, Brad Taylor and Ed Barnard finished with a wicket each.
