With home ground advantage in the Worcester derby on Saturday, HTS Drostdy cruised to a 41-7 win over Worcester Gimnasium, even though their healthy output was seven points fewer than they have averaged this season.
The first half was tightly contested. At the break, the home side led only 8-0. In the second stanza, though, the Donkies ramped up the tempo to race away from Gim.
Hookers were among the leading try scorers on the weekend, and Drostdy’s no. 2, JP Lotriet, was in the thick of things, crashing over the try line on three separate occasions.
Left-wing Darren Makeza finished twice after Drostdy manufactured two overlaps, while inside centre Willvino Paultin impressed with his clever runs and joined Makeza on the scoresheet.
Worcester Gim’s only try came from their captain and eighthman, Amaan Adendorff, who bundled his way over the try line thanks to a powerful and passionate last-minute carry. Flyhalf Luciun de Bruyn added the extras just before the final whistle blew.
With the defeat, the visitors saw their three-match winning streak ended. Drostdy, meanwhile, won for the fifth successive time.
The Donkies will have two weeks to prepare for their next outing, a big test at Paarl Gimnasium. Gimmies ran their winning streak up to 11 matches with a convincing 49-13 victory at Oakdale Landbou.
