SACS vs Boishaai
The visitors, Paarl Boys’ High, after a tight loss to Paul Roos Gimnasium last weekend, returned to winning ways with a 32-16 victory at SACS on Saturday.
The southern suburbs’ school put forth a noble effort and went into the half-time break trailing only 13-14, with their flyhalf Jake Dave scoring all of their points: a try, which he converted, and two penalties.
In the second half, Boishaai hit their stride. Their big lock, Derrick Groenewald, ploughed over the try line, while hooker, JP Norton, also forced his way over.
Cayden Snyman and Dirk Farmer, on the wings, also made it onto the scoresheet, as the visitors found rewards both up front, with the forwards, and out wide, with their backs.
SACS will be tested again in a fortnight when they take on Wynberg Boys’ High.
Paul Roos vs Bishops
Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) extended its run of victories to seven with a one-sided 68-3 triumph over Bishops in Stellenbosch on Saturday.
Bishops’ only points came from an accurate penalty strike from flyhalf Caleb Clark, but PRG dominated the set pieces, from which they started many successful training ground moves.
Hooker Chris Meyburgh was lethal off the back of the rolling maul, collecting a hat-trick of tries, thanks to his pack’s hard work. Lock Sebastian Cilliers also proved to be a physical force, scoring a brace, thanks to some wall-breaking carries.
Centres Albert Nel and Tiaan Basson were knives in the midfield and sliced through the Bishops’ defence. A comfortable win in front of the home supporters made for a pleasing return from injury for Basson.
A far tougher examination faces Basson and company on the coming weekend, however, when Paul Roos visits Paarl Gimnasium. While PRG has now won seven on the trot, Paarl Gim’s record stands at 11 in a row.
Strand vs Hugenote
Hoërskool Strand, frustratingly, again found themselves the losers by a small margin at Hoërskool Brackenfell. Last weekend, they fell 29-35 to Hoërskool Hugenote (Wellington). On Saturday, there was only one point in it, with Brakkies claiming a 30-29 win.
Stand’s blindside flank Josh Human and lock Schalk Beukes fought ferociously and both bagged braces, while captain and eighthman Rohan Bezuidenhout tallied his usual five points.
Strand will need to review their narrow losses and see if there is a common denominator in those defeats. The margins have been slim, and even a minor adjustment could turn the tide.
